Looking for a new job in 2012?

new_yr_resLooking for a new job in 2012?  Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Here are a few tips that you should include in your preparations:

Spend time on your CV
Even the very best CV won’t get you the job, but it will get you the interview. If your CV is an old one you have on file from the last time you were looking 3 years ago, don’t just add on your most recent job and send it on. This is the most important document you’ll prepare this year, so give it plenty of time and make sure to get someone else to read it before it goes out.

Make sure you include your qualifications, competencies, responsibilities and achievements. Be clear and concise. Remember that some employers will search through CVs by keywords.

Don’t exaggerate, don’t lie and no typos!

Spend time on your Linkedin profile
Your Linkedin profile is your personal professional website and online CV, so make sure that it presents you properly. There are over 605,000 Irish candidates on Linkedin which means it has almost a third of the entire workforce online.  Per capita, Irish people use Linkedin more than any other country in the world besides the USA and the Netherlands.

Having a good profile will mean that you can be directly approached by in-house or agency recruiters who feel that your background may be a good fit for their requirements.

Your Linkedin profile should accurately reflect your CV so again, don’t exaggerate, don’t lie and no typos!

Spend time preparing for your interview
You could be called for interview at any time so be ready. Always do your homework on whatever company you are applying to, and be prepared to answer the questions: “Why do you want to work for us?” and “Why should we hire you?”

Most interviewers will ask you the same questions so think in advance about how you want to answer them and then practice, practice and practice some more. How you present yourself at interview and how you communicate with your interviewer is key.

Remember that if every applicant’s experience, technical skills and qualifications are equal, the person who gets offered the job will be the person who the interviewer would like to work beside every day.
